Question

Brush showing on mask but not on Photo

Using Photoshop V24.1.1 on MacBook Pro M1.  Brush stokes will show up on the mask but doesn't effect the photo. Switched between white and black, reset brush, used different layer.  Worked the day before.  Doing B&W, darkening the sky.  I can do linear gradients top and bottom but the brush will not work (quit working).  Level 6 in the attached file.  The dark sky is from the linear gradient but I made a large stroke across the top and middle to illustrate the point.

@Guy27634555t799

Can you resize your Layers panel and show us all of the layers?

We see that you have layers called Levels 4, 5, and 6. Do you have six Levels layers?

For testing purposes, can you hide all but one adjustment layer and see if the brush tool works?

Tried different brush, switched from Black to white, reset preferences
etc. It was working fine the last time i used photoshop the day before.
I'm sure it's something simple but too simple for me to figure out.

So, it's a specific BRUSH that isn't working or the mask itself? If it's just one brush you need to check your brush settings - check the options bar and your brush panel. Options bar looks fine in screenshot. Did you try the brush in a regular layer to see how it behaves? So your level 6 layer should change the value of the sky to something lighter. Again, I can't tell what's happening without being able to turn the layers on and off myself. Have you tried using a different brush?

Any new layer that I add for that specific brush....take a look at the attached image above.

Thank  you

It's really hard to tell what's happening with your layers. Are you sure you can see everything that is happing with them? Can you do what you are trying to do with less layers or isolate with groups? Which layer is not performing the way you want?

Hi @Guy27634555t799 sorry you are having issues.

Let's make sure we're in a default state and there are no stale settings somewhere:

Restore your preferences using this manual method:

https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/using/preferences.html#Manually

Does it work correctly?

If that doesn't solve it, you can quit Photoshop and put the Settings folder back.

Thank you,

Cory
