Brush to Eraser in 2020

Hi! Why can't I easily toggle between brush and eraser, keeping the same type of stroke?  I don't even see "clear" as a mode option. And the tilde key isn't working on my Mac laptop to switch. Please help!

Can you post screenshot with panels and Options bar visible?
Can you switch between Brush and Eraser by holding/releasing E key?
