Brush toggling to cross hairs

I'm having a sudden today issue with my brushes switching back to crosshairs when I try to use them. Running a MacBook Pro, caps is off (on both laptop and external keyboard), prefrences are set correctly (never changed them and it was working find yesterday), tried restarting the app and the system multiple times including shut down and reseting PRAM. Photoshop is up to date as well. I've tried changing prefrences and then back again - randomlly it will show me the brsuh tip (or work for a couple minutes), but as soon as I click and try to use it, it switches back to cross hairs. i was able to set it to precise and then turn on caps to get my brush tip back, but this is a pain and not how the app is supposed to work.

I use this daily in my work, any help is appreciated.
