brush tool on layer mask

Hi, looking for some help. When I have created a layer mask and using the brush to hide/reveal it stops working once I click off.  So when using the brush on black or white it starts off doing what it is supposed to but as soon as I move to a different part of the image to brush again it stops working. It starts to do the opposite despite the brush colour not changing and when I do change the brush from white to black or vice versa it then won't do anything at all. 

Any advice would be appreciated.

Adobe currently has 23 programs included in a full Cloud subscription

    Apologies,

    thanks John,  first time posting. 

    It was in Photoshop.  I have figured it out now- not sure how it was changed but the mode was set to difference once I switched it back to normal it did the job!
