Question

Bug: When View > Extras is checked, my brush strokes become jagged. Why? How can I possibly fix this?

After a lot of testing I've pinpointed the cause of my seemingly random jagged brush line problem: Extras keeps activating. My brush strokes behave normally when Extras is unchecked but become jagged and sloppy when Extras is activated. Unfortunately for me, Extras re-activates upon creating any type of selection as the "Show > <Selection Edges>" option is triggered. I've tried every method available to prevent "Extras" from activating after a selection is made as a temporary solution but there's just no way to do that presently. The best I can do right now is manually press Ctrl+H (I changed the hotkey to Ctrl+M) everytime I create a selection. I have no idea why having Extras activated causes my brush tool to malfunction, but it does. I swear this is the issue. What I'm trying to do at this point is find a way to uncouple <Show Selection Edges> from the set of things that activates "Extras". Another solution would be to just figure out why "Extras" is causing my brush to flip out in the first place. The bug creates a very subtle distortion of the brush strokes where instead of smooth clean lines I get almost smooth lines that almost get the job done but not quite, as if they got distracted along the way thinking that they need to snap to something but they don't know what they are supposed to snap to so they just keep drawing after a momentary lag. This is a very strange problem which may not have an obvious solution. I thought it was a driver issue but I don't have this problem in other drawing programs like Painter or Krita.Edit: So I was about to submit this question with an image comparing the working brush strokes to the malfunctioning brush strokes when I realized that having Extras checked doesn't always cause the bug to occur. It's more like it allows the brush strokes to malfunction if Extras is checked. However, it doesn't ensure that the brush strokes will malfunction. Hope that makes sense.

I'm using Windows 7 64-Bit / Photoshop CC2017 64-bit / 32 Gigs Ram / Duel SSD HDs / Nvidia GTX 670 (Potato Series) / Wacom Intuos 5 Pro Large.

i had 2 guides on my document that was causing the problem. uncheck the 'extras' and the random jaggy line goes away.

The file paths for my Adobe Photoshop CC2017 don't match the ones in the tutorial so i can't even find the Settings folder to drop the text file into. I don't even think that matters because it doesn't seem like I'm even having an issue that that would resolve.

I'm trying the Text file part of the windows ink troubleshoot. I never knew about the text file part.

Thanks for the suggestions. Show Extras Options just makes the UI Tools invisible so messing with those checkboxes wouldn't prevent Extras from activating. I have had Lazy Nezumi installed for a few months now. The whole reason I got LN in the first place was because I couldn't use the brush tool in Photoshop due to this issue. I didn't realize I had this issue at the time, I thought I just sucked at digital painting and had terrible hand eye coordination. Now I know that I have no problem drawing in other programs it's just something with Photoshop causing the issue. Lazy Nezumi smooths the lines fine but it also lags out your brush strokes and it's really just trading 1 inconvenience for another. Plus I don't think I should have to rely on a $35 third party software to fix Photoshop (especially when I'm dropping $15/mo on it).

I have windows ink turned off. I have PenTabletInput stopped. I have gone through all the troubleshooting tuts I can find. Cut my life into pizza this is my plastic fork. If it was obvious I would have figured it out by now.

I dunno, maybe I just need a new video card. I've updated every driver and cleanly installed them.

I spent the whole night drawing and toggling extras on and off. I'd say it works about 90% of the time when I notice the line work acting up. Unchecking Extras seems to lose it's effectiveness the longer I use Photoshop ( after a few hours). I usually resolve this by restarting Photoshop and hey presto my line work is smooth again upon restart. I've tried purging  without restarting and it doesn't make much of a difference. My document efficiency is alway 100% on the indicator.

Hope this helps. Any thoughts?

Is everything ticked like this?

I'm thinking you could un-tick everything, and turn them on one at a time to see if one particular thing triggers the issue.

It might be more productive to try and track down the problem with the brush strokes rather than chase the Extras angle.  If it was Windows 8.1 or 10  we'd ask whether you are using Windows Ink or WinTab, but I just don't know if that is relevant with Windows 7.  Check it anyway in Wacom Preferences, and if Windows Ink is turned on, uncheck it and add the little WinTab text file.

Re: Use Windows Ink Issue with photshop CC 2015.

Are you using Lazy Nezumi Pro?  That might sort out your issue all by itself.

If you are still struggling, can you show us a screen shot of the problem brush strokes?  Believe it or not, that can actually tell us a lot.

BTW, no such thing as shaky brush strokes with Lazy Nezumi Pro :-)

This sounds like an issue that might be more than a little hard to even prove exists, but if you think it truly is a bug you may want to post over at

Photoshop Family

You may want to post images showing the actual difference in brush-application.
