Calculating CMYK usage per page

Hello:

I need to write a PhotoShop CS4 JavaScritp that calculates total CMYK usage that will be used to calculate the cost-per-page, not sure were to start!

First of all:

Are the pages really done completely in Photoshop and are they in a 100%-scale?

Other than that I suppose the point to start from would have to be the four CMYK- (and possible spot-) Channels’ histograms, which provide information about the number of pixels of each of the 256 possible color-amounts.

That should correlate with the amount of actual print-color in some way … but the physics of printing materials is not my field of experience.
