Question

can I cmd+drag a shape layer to make another layer like i can with a group?

Hi

this has been driving me mad lately. Is it possible to  cmd+drag a shape layer onto another shape layer, to create a vector mask - in the same way you can with a group?  I can get it to work if the masked layer isnt a vector shape, but not if it is

Im sure i used to be able to (unless im imagining it)

any help would be much appreciated

thanks

Nick

If you want to keep everything vector, there's two possible approaches.

The simplest way would be to put the shape layer you want to mask above the shape layer you want to use as a mask and create a clipping mask (Alt or Option click the divider line between the two layers).

Another way would be to select the path you want to use as the mask with the Path Selection tool, and copy it. Then target the shape layer you want to mask in the Layers panel, and paste the mask you copied. You will now have two paths on the same layer. With the pasted path still selected, click on the Pen tool. In the Options bar at the top of the screen, select Intersect Shape Areas.

thanks a lot for your help!

Both great solutions. Its a little strange how one has to change workflow if you're dealing with a vector shape though. Would be great if i could just cmd drag a shape layer to create a mask.  Oh well - guess its just another one for the 'nice to have' list :-)

    thanks again for your help!

    You're welcome, Nickholl75.

You're right that it would be more consistent if it worked the same way as with regular layers. You can submit a request at Feature Request/Bug Report Form

At least the two methods will get you by in the meantime.
