Can I select just the black line drawing on white and put it on a layer with transparent background?

I have a drawing, black ink on white background I have scanned and now would like to overlay just the drawing onto a photograph. To do that, I will need to 'lift' just the black drawing lines out of the white background so I can then paste just the line drawing onto its own layer. The magic wand tool is not doing a very good job at all, is there a way to best select just the black line drawing itself that would preserve it fairly well in order to do this?

Before anyone suggests it, using blend modes is so much batter than using Blend If with this sort of situation.

EDIT: Double answer, just do it as the comment above says. 😉

Use multiply or darken blend modes to treat the white as transparent without having to physically separate it.
