Question

Can panels dock side by side, so Layers will have History stuck its right side, both open?

Basic problem: MacBook Pro on right with HDMI monitor as main work monitor on left.

If it goes to sleep, on awakening, all tool panels are stacked on top of each other, on top of the tool bar at the left. I have to drag each one to working position over the right laptop screen.

I saved several different versions of the workspace, with all the panels in place on the right, on the laptop screen. Choosing any one of them doesn't work to move everything into place after awakening.

Big thanks for shedding any light on this.

HDMI out to main monitor, which, by the way, is very hard to wake up after sleep.

Sounds like a problem with Big Sur collapsing your panels on extended display setup. Try saving a window >> workspace >> new workspace to save a good-looking workspace.  Then use window Workspace >> name you saved to get back to where you want to be.
