Can't create a layer mask

When i select my Layer and click add layer mask nothing happens. Please help me figure out why?

I figured out my issue. My settings were set to SCREEN vs. NORMAL. NORMAL allowed me to apply a dissolve to this image.

Can you post a screenshot with all the pertinent panels opened, also what version of Photoshop and OS are you using
