Can't figure out how to subtract the round shape from the large rectangle

Question

For the past few hours I've been trying to figure out how to cut out a specific shape (in this case created with the Curvature Pen Tool) from a larger shape behind it. The "Combine Shapes" option in the Layers dropdown is also greyed out. Ideally, I would also like to know how to create a stroke around the hole that I cut out of the larger shape. I just can't figure out how masking is helpful here. Any tips?

Using 25.12.0 Release on MacOS Sequoia 15.0

Please post screenshot with the layers panel expanded and visible.

Do you want to create a stroke around the shape that is now selected on your screenshot or something else? If that is shape layer, create mask, add stroke effect, turn on the mask hide effects and the deed should be done.
