can't get smooth lines with grid

I used the pencil tool to draw the figure "8", then added the grid and drew the other lines which are not as smooth. How can I have the grid showing and draw smooth free handed lines likes the figure 8?

Thank you both, Turning off Snap To Grid solved the problem.

Turning off View > Snap altogether might also be an option.

What is the View > Snap To > Grid setting?

The new lines are snapping to the grid. You can:

Turn off Snap to Grid in the View menu
or
Set the Grid to a smaller amount in Preferences
or
Work with the Grid that you have
