Can't open AI smart object with Layers in Photoshop CC 2015?

I'm pretty new to Illustrator but have pretty good experience with photoshop. I am trying to open an AI file in Photoshop CC 2015 with the layers shown for editing. It is opening as a Vector Smart Object but when I click on edit contents it just opens to a single layer. Any help would be much appreciated.

Well then I guess we don't need screenshots.  As I said, I am new to Illustrator and did not know that a Smart Object couldn't be edited in Photoshop.  I have edited other AI files in Photoshop with the layers. Thank you for your help.

Smart Objects created in Photoshop or placed pixel images can be edited in Photoshop (provided the edits do not exceed the format’s limitations, so if you place a jpg, then open the SO, add a Layer and try to save that it will cause a problem), Vector Smart Objects are edited in Illustrator,

A Vector Smart Object’s instance is one Layer but when editing it in Illustrator (and provided it was an Illustrator file originally) all its  Layers should be maintained.

Could you please post screenshots (with the pertinent Panels visible) to clarify?

Under Illustrator’s File > Export > Export As one can export a Photoshop file with Layers (»Write Layers«).

I have tried exporting in Illustrator and selected "Write Layers" but the Layers still are not editable in Photoshop. You stated that "A Vector Smart Object’s instance is one Layer". Does that mean that the Layers can't be edited in photoshop? Exactly what Panels of Screenshots would you like me to post?

If you are talking about the Layers inside a Vector Smart Object then of course not, a Vector Smart Object can be edited in Illustrator.

Please post screenshots with Layer Panels of the original ai-file, the psd-file, the opened Smart Object (again in Illustrator).
