When I drag a new image into photoshop, I can not manipulate the smart object, and when I attempt to "place" the image in, it automatically deletes itself/involuntarily removes itself from the canvas, I've tried with over images and got the same results, can someone please help?

Be sure your images are RGB or CMYK images

If one of them is Gif or PNG - 8 bits image - you cant do it.

If you see (index) near the name of your file in Photoshop tab - you need to change color mode

Go to Image > MNode > RGB and choose it to RGB

im using a PSD file that i've saved a few weeks ago so I could add more things to it for future CGI Projects, and all the imigase that Im using have all worked before, but now, when ever I want to open an image that I can add to the PSD, if I press enter or select place, the new image deletes it self.

Are you tring to change the image encapsulated in a smart object?

no, I'm trying to drag an image into a new layer, and it imports as a smart object that you can manipulate before pressing enter or selecting place and when I do it deletes it self

Are you trying to duplicate an image Layer or add an additional image to another image?

A screen shot might help.
