Can you import/place multi layered .psd as part of recorded action?

Question

I am trying to batch process many 120 page 'comic books' with "ink" drawing as individual .jpegs from my PC, and paper texture background as .psd template with two groups of half a dozen layers with different blending, effects etc (ink .jpeg goes into bottom one, and is only transformed a bit).

I can make an action that works well on a single image when done manually but when I use image processing or automate it's all messed up (It saves only a jpeg as it was with no layers or effects from a psd).

It is as if I can't make the .psd file a part of the action neither when placing a .jpeg into it or trying to place a .jpeg first and .psd "onto" it.

What am I doing wrong?

I don’t understand the process you describe; could you please post screenshots with the pertinent Panels (Toolbar, Layers, Options Bar, …) visible to illustrate?

I wonder if this is a »basic« template situation (for which several Scripts have been posted, not that this means any of them would meet your exact needs) or something more complex (with additional manual input etc.).
