Cannot Get Edit > Fill (on empty layer) to Fill with Color (Ps 2023, rel. 24.1.1)

I just updated to Ps 2023 rel. 24.1.1 on my Win 11 Pro desktop PC this morning.

I've opened a new blank (empty) layer in my layer stack above my (locked) Background layer image. A duplicate copy of the background layer is above the empty layer.

I'm trying to fill the empty layer with black and cannot get it to work. I've tried:

1- Edit > Fill > Black

2- Edit > Fill > Foreground Color   (with Black set as my foreground color).

No matter what I do (I even tried turning off the duplicated layer above the empty layer as well as leaving the eye icon on), I cannot get Ps 24.1.1 to fill the empty layer with what I need; in this case, a black fill over the entire empty layer.

Is this a bug? Is anyone else experiencing this? Or, did I do something flukey? I'm working on a time sensitive project, so any assist is appreciated.

Can you show a screen shot of your layers panel ?

Is there a lock on the layer you are trying to fill (Lock transparency perhaps) or is it set to a blend mode?

Hi Kevin,

I'll attach a screenshot per your request. I was also making an OBS video capture for you to upload.

But .... I think it was the 'nut' on the handle that was the issue. I hadn't noticed, before I posted, that the "Preserve Transparency" box was ticked On in the Edit > Fill pop-up box. I apparently always had that checked on and it never presented an issue for me before. Once I unchecked that, I was able to create my black fill layer. Phew!  (Well, that was easy)

Now I'm really curious when it would be useful to have that Preserve Transparency turned on. Since, as mentioned, I've never turned it on & off before, it was checked on and it never presented an issue before.

Your layer order is out of whack. Drag Layer 1 above the background copy and fill.

You are filling a layer hidden behind a copy of the background.
