Cannot merge layer group

Hi there,

I cannot merge a layer group which has a layer mask on it, I am getting "Could not complete the Merge Group command because of a program error."

Restarting Photoshop makes no difference.

To merge the group I have to drag the mask onto an empty later created for that purpose, merge the group, drag the mask onto the now merged group, and then delete the empty layer.

I am using Photoshop 25.4.0 on a Mac Studio M2 Max, Ventura 13.5

Any help gratefully recieved,

Jamie

If that should not help could you provide the file?

Hey, @Jamie Farquharson. Thanks for sharing the details. I'll move this to discussions for now and help you figure this out. Before troubleshooting, update Photoshop to the latest version (v25.5.1) via the Creative Cloud desktop app & check if the issue exists.

Please share your workflow in screenshots or a video. Try these steps:

Go to Edit > Preferences (CTRL + K) > Performance > Advanced Settings > Disable 'GPU Compositing' & restart Photoshop & check if it helps.

Let me know how it goes.

Hi Sameer, thanks for your reply. Turns out everything was back to normal the next day, but I will certainly try your advice if the problem occurs again. I've noticed a few buggy problems like this since moving to PS 2024, so I'll be applying your solution to those as well in the future. Thanks again, and have a good day
