CC 2018 Select and Mask -> Refine Edge PC Hangs

Everytime I use the refine edge brush tool in Select and Mask, the cpu and memory usage spikes on my machine and never recovers. Even after waiting for many many minutes photoshop never becomes responsive again and the only solution it to kill photoshop. I have version 19.1.0 installed.

I would really like to be able to use the Select Subject tool, and then quickly refine the edge, but to no avail. How can this be fixed and resolved?

OK, doing some more research I used my mouse to refine edge brush and it worked two times in a row. When I switched back to my pen/wacom tablet, it hangs. I've got the most recent Wacom drivers installed... have found some other threads with people moving back to an older version of the wacom drivers to fix.

Well so glad you figured it out ! Yes my pen sometimes has issues as well. In liquify its shaky.

Hi Ken. It is still most likely related to your GPU despite the test you have tried. You need to make sure the video card drivers are up to date, and sourced from the card maker's website. It would help ifiy u could open Photoshop and go Help > System Info > Copy and paste to this thread.

OK, doing some more research I used my mouse to refine edge brush and it worked two times in a row. When I switched back to my pen/wacom tablet, it hangs. I've got the most recent Wacom drivers installed... have found some other threads with people moving back to an older version of the wacom drivers to fix.

Then resetting preferences is probably your best bet.

Edit>Preferences>General and bottom right check ' reset preferences on quit ' and then close program and relaunch. If you have your workspace set up the way you like it then save it first beforehand and then you can just reload it. Window>Workspace>new workspace and name it and save it. Then you'll find it in the workspaces tab when you relaunch.

I had the same issue and I found this that Dave posted at some point and it worked for me;

1. Go to Preferences >Performance > Graphics Processor > Advanced and uncheck Open CL. Test on a newly opened document

2. Go to Preferences and uncheck use Graphics Processor - if this works recheck it then change the advanced settings first to Basic , then normal and then advanced - testing each time on a newly opened document

I just kept mine at basic with Open CL checked and all seems to work fine. I don't do 3D stuff so all good.
