Question

Changing gradient script to solid script

There has been an update to the "color overlay" tool and I'm struggling with getting it to work for me. I use procreate to script lettering. And the brush I typically use makes the lettering a bit "gradient" looking. In the past, it wouldn't matter. I would import it into photoshop and use color overlay to make it all one color. But overlay is not working for me. Any suggestions?? It changes the color, but it still remains gradient.

Upload your PSD and post a link to it. If your layer Opacity is 100% and fill 100% and there is no layers mask. It look like the layers gradient pixels Color were overplayed  and turned to blue but the layer has areas where pixels are partly transparent  so the Pixels in these areas blend with the lower layer color the lower layer color in not overlay them. I see no sign of that blue was  blended into the black text. I see no black text. I believe you have a transparency issue. Your text is not opaque

Try duplicating the blue text layer a few times  see if the blue becomes 100%  opaque

What do you mean by Color Overlay tool?  What tools are you actually using in Photoshop? Can you post screen captures  showing what you are doing so we get some Idea as to what you are doing and seeing?

Here's what I'm working with. This is a painting of mine, but I'm importing my text over the top of it. I script it on my ipad using an apple pencil. I like the brush stroke, but this particular one has a gradient effect. Before the photoshop update I would go to Layer style and then click "color overlay" and choose a color and I was good to go. Now it may change the color, but it keeps the "gradient" effect instead of filling it. Is there a tool I'm not aware of that would help with this? I've done some research and played around with it for hours, but can't figure it out.

So you have a hand drawn raster layer you are adding a color overlay layer style to.  If you set the Opacity setting in the color overlay style it should be like like you want it to be.
