Changing opacity of multiple layer sets at once results in different opacities...

Hi everyone!

I was always wondering why when conveniently selecting multiple layer sets and then changing their opacity, it would set some layer sets perfectly to the desired opacity BUT with others, it also sets EACH layers within the sets to the same opacity which of course results in an overall lesser opacity. Just tried it again with layer sets that have identical contents, so that can't be it also. It's a very random behavior...  (see attached example).

But when setting all layer sets back to 100%, the content of the messed up sets remain at the lower opacity. So it's not even quickly reversible unless undoing that action right away.

It really can't be only one version on one Mac or so having a glitch, I've experienced this behavior several times on different work spaces.

Anyone any ideas?

Ungrateful? Where's that coming from all of a sudden??

I mean, I can disagree if I have a different opinion, can I? No one has proved me wrong so far...

Bottom line of it all for me is:

Whatever the behavior is for each and every one – and obviously we have different results on different workspaces – it is not really user friendly or straight forward, whatever Adobe's intention was here (or also not).

I'm closing this topic now as it is not leading to anything...

No offense, no harm done, just have more important things to focus on rn.

    Cheers!

    The answer is

Shift+clicking on closed groups selects the contained layers - ONLY IN THE DIRECTION YOU CLICK! Click a closed group, Shift click a closed group above, and all the layers in the top group get selected. The layers in the lower group do not.

However, if you select a closed group, and Shift click a layer below, all the layers in the upper group get select.

Why? Because collapsing group folders only hides layers from palette, but clicking behaviors and commands work as normal.

So it's not a glitch at all. Hope that explains it.

I wonder if you are selecting both the folder and layers within for each group (your layers palette shows a closed nested layer group)? If so all layers should indeed change to the same new transparency value.

If you want to maintain relative transparency differences... make a new enclosing group, and change only that folder's opacity, or convert the group of layers to a single smart object, and change that layer.

    Hope this helps.

Of course I know that. No I only always change opacity of the (closed) group. I'm very organized and usually leave groups closed until I need to make changes within.

As I mentioned before, I'm having this issue for years AND on several different machines...  I'm really surprised literally no one else ever came across that glitch

So, on your screenshot you are not showing which layers you've selected when the glitch happens.

Maybe before answers, you first need more questions.

Are some of the layers linked?

Are you using "pass through" as the group visibility option?

Does it work on some but not others? What is different about the groups and layers?

For the "glitch" to follow you to different machines, its most likely something you are doing, or an intended result of the program design.

Get a screen grab of your actual layers panel in Photoshop. Hard to tell what's happening without that.

    Hi Daniel,

sorry for the delay! Here's a screen grab of my layers. Nothing fancy in there, I had this issue with very simple folder sets as well with more complicated ones.

Are the individual layers all set to the same starting transparency value?
