changing white space to transparent space in Photoshop CS5

I believe that there's something wrong with my Photoshop software, but it's also possible I'm doing something wrong.

I have been trying to change the white space surrounding an image into transparent space so that I can add it as a layer to another file.

I have tried changed the file to PNG, used the magic wand and delete/clear commands as well as the background eraser tool, but the background never changes to transparent.  Am I missing something, or is there something wrong with my version?

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Frank

Thanks, Dave. The problem turned out to be that the settings had been

changed from showing little gray squares to pure white--which I was trying

to get rid of. I changed the settings.

Hi

In the layers panel click on the lock symbol to unlock it before using delete/clear. This changes the layer from a background layer to an ordinary layer (Layer 0)

You will need to save as a PSD, TIFF or PNG to retain the transparent background.
