Clearing pixel layer without deleting path

I've just started using paths for painting symmetry and I've come across a niggling issue. I can't seem to tell Photoshop I want to clear a selection on a pixel layer without deleting the most recent path. Delete key and Edit > Clear, both hit the path before deleting the pixels.

Have you unselected the Path in the Paths Panel.

Could you please post a screenshot taken at View > 100% and with the pertinent Panels (Layers, Paths, Options Bar, …) visible?

If you know doing something will delete a path you want to keep. Duplicate that path in the paths palette before you do the Photoshop that will delete the path you want to keep.   However, I have never seen menu Edit>Clear delete a Path in the paths palette. Are you sure you are targeting a layer contenr when you uset the menu Edit>Clear or the delete key.
