Clicking on Edit in Quick Mask Mode doesn't do anything

Just installed latest Photoshop update (Mac). Now Edit in Quick Mask Mode refuses to have any effect. The relevant layer in Layers Palette goes red, rather than the selection I'm trying to make with the vignette tool!

When clicking back out of Edit in Quick Mask Mode at the bottom of the tool bar, there is nothing selected for me to work with.

Channels are all in order, tool mode is set to Normal, and at 100%. What is happening here?

Looking on a previous request for help on this topic, I see it hasn't been answered, and this was 2011.

Perhaps somebody at Adobe who oversees the Discussions can explain, or is there nobody there?

Hi guys, thanks for the two suggestions! I've sorted out the problem by re-setting my Preferences, though I've then had to re-set up my workspace because of that... Edit in Quick Mask mode now working correctly. It must have been a glitch somewhere in the Preferences.

Hi ,

I'm not sure what the Vignette tool is. Do you know you can add/reduce vignetting in Filter > Lens Correction > Custom > Vignette?

But back to the Quick Mask question. (Screenshots from my MacBook Pro). Try starting with a selection—it makes it easier to see what is going on. My guess is that you don't have a selection. That is why the red is appearing on the layer name but not on the image.

Click the Quick Mask button, or just tap Q. The red overlay appears on the image and the mask appears in the Channels panel. Both disappear when you either click the Quick Mask button or tap Q again. It also appears as a layer highlight. Adjust the mask while QM is active, then return to Standard Mode.
