clone stamp tool not working in Windows 10

I have seen a few posts on here but nothing seems to work.  using windows 10 on lenovo laptop and I have CS5 - yes i know it is old but i use it infrequently.  everything was working fine until about 2 months ago or so.. hard to say for sure when it stopped working as I don't use it every day.

 

when I ALT click on the area the cross hairs come up and it seems to be selected, but when I try to stamp, nothing happens.  I have reset the tool (dont have any presets really anyway) made sure all layers were selected, tried just the current layer,  and every iteration I could think of.  

 

I haven't noticed any other functions not working.  Content aware fill works just fine when I use that.  Has anyone else seen this and able to fix?  very frustrating.  I am not interested in buying a monthly subscription because I just dont use Photoshop that much.

Would you mind trying to reset the preferences of Photoshop using the steps mentioned in the link below and check if that helps?

that fixed it! had to reboot my laptop to get photoshop to restart, but the clone stamp works again. I had tried resetting the tool preferences but that didn't work. this did. Since I don't have any preferences set up, I didn't lose anything. Thanks!
