Color Select Issue

​I've been using the Color Range select option under the Select tab to remove an entire color range in my images.  Recently, once I select the color range I want, when I go to delete the selection I'm getting a "Fill" pop-up.  However, I don't want a fill, just to remove color.  Does anyone know how to get rid of this?

    Adding a visual to Dave's response.  In both scenarios I had a selection and then hit Delete.  Changing the layer from Background, which is locked, to Layer 0 allows me to delete pixels.

    It sounds like you are on a background layer.

    In the layers panel, click on the lock symbol to turn "Background" into "Layer 0" then deleting will make the pixels transparent
