Color settings for newsprint

I had some newsprint color settings I picked up at a seminar that I managed to lose when reinstalling photoshop. Has anyone got any settings that will work for most newsprint reproduction? I'm thinking 30% dot gain and black at 90% and total ink levels at 240, but I may be in left field. Can anyone help?

Thanks,

Joe

Hi Joe,

the 'color settings' option you mention where dotgain, TAC etc can be entered is a bit old hat now, it’s basically a hangover from before Photoshop 5, I believe. That's 20 years ago. It allows you to "save" what aI have been told is a kind of "fake:" ICC profile.

It's far better in the world of "modern" colour management to adopt a "real" ICC profile for this, far more sophisticated - I suggest you speak to the newspaper people in your industry (in your country) and ask for an ICC profile for this - here in Europe we go to eci.org for print standardisation info. http://www.eci.org/en/colourstandards/newsprint

"In the area of news print ECI closely cooperates with Ifra. On the Ifra website you will find the currently available ICC profiles for news print. The profile with the name ISOnewspaper26v4.icc is based on characterisation data conforming to 12647-3:2005 (Dotgain 26%, Total Ink Converage 240%, White Backing). More information to be found at www.ifra.com "

I hope this helps

Joe

start here, https://www.idealliance.org/gracol

ISO/PAS 15339 Reference Print Conditions
ISO/PAS 15339 Graphic technology – Printing from digital data across multiple technologies. The following data files are a normative part of ISO/PAS 15339-2. Includes: ISO15339-CRPC1 – Typical Coldset News – Small gamut prinitng (newsprint). ISO15339-CRPC2 – Typical HeatsetNews – Moderate gamut printing on improved newsprint type paper. ISO15339-CRPC3– Typical Prem Uncoated – Utility printing on a matte uncoated type paper. ISO15339-CRPC4 – Typical SuperCal – General printing on super-calendared paper. ISO15339-CRPC5 – Typical PubCoated – Typical publication printing. ISO15339-CRPC6 – Typical PremCoated – Large gamut (typically commercial) printing. ISO15339-CRPC7 – Typical Extra Large –  Extra-large gamut printing processes.

SNAP is one option US folk mention - but its seemingly out of date I think as its from 2007.

I hope this helps
