Command J including image elements outside selected area

Not sure if this is a technical issue, but I have never had this happen in the 20+ years using Photoshop. In image one I have made a selection of what I want to copy to a new layer using command+J. When I do this i get what is shown in image two: a repeat of another section of branch outside the selected area. For the record, the lasso tool is set at 0px feather.
I am going to guess this is somehow related to generative fill, but I cannot fathom how.
Photoshop 25.1.0
