Content aware fill says selection empty but doesn't appear to be

My content aware fill is what I'm having trouble with. When I select and press backspace, it says selection area is empty. But I'm not sure why it says that because I am on a background copy layer. Does it only work on the background layer itself (which it is doing)? Maybe I'm using it wrong, but it doesn't show a blank layer I'm trying to remove from. Thank you so much! And again, I may just be new.

To best answer this, we need to see a screenshot that includes:

  • your selection (marching ants)
  • your Layers panel with the layer selected

 

I'm on Mac. The Backspace/Delete key only works on the Background layer. On other layers, use Edit > Fill > Content Aware. It might be the same on Windows. Try this first.
