control click

The tutorial screen shows Windows while your screen shows Mac. On a Mac, use Cmd+Click, but not on the photo.

• Cmd+Click on the photo will select the layer in the Layers panel
• Cmd+Click on the thumbnail in the appropriate layer in the Layers panel will select all of the pixels on the layer as shown in the tutorial

I assume you mean Ctrl/CMD clicking on the layers thumbnail to make a selection as per this tutorial, can you post a screenshot of the Photoshop interface with all the pertinent panels opened

That looks like a Safari window, do you have a Photoshop-related question?
