Converting from JPEG to DNG in an embedded system - Photoshop won't open, Lightroom will

Hello Folks,

This is an odd workflow, I know. We have an embedded system which takes JPEG pictures, but we need to save them in DNG format. We have done our best to do this 'back conversion', and have created the output DNG file. This file opens in standard Windows programs like paint, photos, etc. It also opens in Lightroom. It does not however open in Photoshop.

Any ideas, suggestions?

Looks like your file is actually a tiff file.

If in photoshop you go to File>Open As, click on your file and change the file format to TIFF the file should open. It should also open in Camera Raw if you you use the same procedure but change the file format to Camera Raw.

DNG is a type of TIFF. You can have a file that is both a valid TIFF and a valid DNG. So yes I'd try TIFF to see if that opens.

This type of file must be opened by Camera Raw or lightroom. After there are pixels Photoshop can work with it.

Try this: run Adobe Bridge, navigate to .dng file, select it then press Ctrl + R what will open image in Camera Raw. Click on Open Image button and it will open it in Photoshop.

I guess you are trying to open file using File > Open in Photoshop, or some other method which is tied or directed to Photoshop which can not open DNG directly, it must go through Camera Raw plugin.

Thank you for the response! I have tried this, though when I try to open in Adobe Bridge, it just opens in Photoshop, and I get the error "Could not complete your request because it is not the right kind of document"

Bridge like Photoshop can host ACR and thus it's not unexpected to me it doesn't work because this appears to be some bug with ACR but oddly not Lightroom.
