Copy/Paste Basic Functions Not Working

Lately when I open photoshop it seems like a lot of the basic functions have become unclickable on the dropdown menus.

 

I literally have one layer in my project and it is selected and when I select Edit - most of the functions are unclickable including Cut & Copy. 

 

Any ideas whats wrong?

Some features are not always available for use.  When a features can not be user Photoshop will often gray out menu items.  Look here in the background layer edit menu you see many item are grayed out. However, if you have something in the clipboard have are active selection the backgrounds edit menu will have fewer things grayed out.
