Copying shape to create new layer, but layer comes with shape filled in colour?

Hi All, 

I am trying to copy and past a shape so that it become a new layer to help with the shadowing later on in my model. However, whenever i copy and paste the shape, the shape appears in the new layer but it is filled in with a colour instead of the image I have gone around with the shape. 

Could some please explain how i stop this happening?
