"Could not use brush tool because of program error" persists

I'm getting this error when using brush tool with Slim Pen 2 on Surface Pro 8. I had a topic opened up for this and we troubleshooted the problem (here's the original topic: Solved: Re: Could not use brush tool because of a program ... - Adobe Support Community - 13074321). Turning off "Multithreaded Composing" seemed to work initially so I marked the answer correct, but it seems to have been just a lucky fluke because the problem still persists.

Any more ideas?

I was working on an 8k image and was getting this same error. I opened a smaller file to test and see if the paint brush was malfunctioning across the board, or just within my large file. I was able to paint in the smaller file. When I went back and tried painting on my original 8k image, it worked.

Hi, I see several things: the GPU driver is semi-old, check if there's a newer one.

The GPU is not the most powerful out there... (the compute score seems low)

The first step would be to enable "Older GPU Mode (Pre 2016)" in Preferences > Technology Previews.

If this does not work, maybe reverting to older compositing by checking "Deactivate Native Canvas" in the menu Edit/Preferences/Technology preview (Pc) or Photoshop/Preferences/Technology preview (Mac), then restart Photoshop.

Is there seriously nobody who can help with this? It's absurd that a modern $2K machine cannot handle a simple tool like brush! It should work fine, I'm clueless what to do about this. Does Adobe have a proper support chat somewhere that I can contact? This community forum seems to get me nowhere with this issue.

Did you try the other suggestions from that post? Memory allocation, etc?

Sorry for late reply, but yes I twiddled with memory allocation too, but nothing I've tried seems to help. The problem still occurs, but it seems to occur most often when using smoothing on brushes (it does occur without it too though).

There is always this lag spike before it happens, very frustrating!
