Cropping and constraining proportions problem in V.20

I have a square image that I'm trying to crop into an oblong shape but when selecting the crop tool, the crop keeps defaulting to constrain proportions.

I've seen something where pressing shift is supposed to reverse the process? But this isn't making any difference for me. AAArgh!

Thanks. But that doesn't make a difference.

Whatever I do, the crop will constrain to the original proportions of the image.
