Cropping tool makes my photo disappear

PS4 - version operating on OS10.9.5 - I have been using CS4 for many years with no problems and then out of the blue working on .psd photos I went to crop the frame but when I pressed 'return' the image box minimised to about 1" sq and the entire image disappeared, however it was still evident in Bridge. After expanding the box I quit it without saving. I changed the name on PS4 and reinstalled the program. I even tried reinstalling the program from Time Machine. I cannot get the function working.

Reinstalling does not reset Preferences.  Check the Options bar and see if anything is set there.

I only have CC 2018 installed, but you should have a Clear button.  Clicking on that will clear any settings.

    many thanks for your reposnse. It appears that I don't have that feature.

    I went through the Forum and have discovered how to reset the tool - just did that and it now works. So I would like to shut down the question.
