CS5 suddenly running very slow

I am using a Dell Laptop, recently Photoshop CS5 has become painfully slow.

I read that I need to do something with a scratch disk.  This is foreign to me.

I went to Edit:Preferences: Performance: but don't see anything that says scratch disk.

Can someone please help with this problem?

Thanks!

I'm a Mac user, but can Photoshop CS5 run successfully under Windows 10?

If you're going to work in Photoshop, you need to know what the scratch disk is.

Photoshop moves a huge amount of data around, and it needs to put all that data somewhere as you work. It's usually too much to be kept in the computer's memory, so it has to be temporarily written to disk (and removed afterwards). That's the scratch disk.

If you only have one drive in your computer, Photoshop reserves a portion of it when it opens. If there's not enough space left on your drive, Photoshop can't work. It simply can't open.

If you have additional drives, you can put the scratch disk there. You do this under Preferences > Scratch Disk.

Do note that when you get that message in Photoshop, you will soon have much bigger problems than Photoshop. Then your system drive is so filled up that it's very close to choking and freezing your whole machine. Take it as a timely warning.

Thank you for your information. Photoshop CS5 has been working on windows 10 for some time. I have had no messages about a scratch disk, however, since photoshop was running slow, I googled info. on what I could do. I have found the section called Sratch Disk, but not sure what to do with this..

    Which version of your OS?
Have you tried resetting your Photoshop preferences?
