Custom Shape and Text Box

To preface, I'm definitely newer to photoshop. Typically, what I can't figure out, I usually google. But I can't seem to find a proper solution to this anywhere.

So I'm trying to put text into a custom shape.  I have read mutliple discussions on how this is supposed to work, but none of them have.  I've attached a screenshot.  As you can see, when I try to type something into my custom shape, two little boxes with a plus sign on the bottom right corner of the shape appear. These seem to appear once I type something past the boundaries of the first line.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Those two + signs indicate that there is overset text i.e. the text cannot be displayed in the size available within the shape. Have you checked the character panel for the leading (line spacing). It could be that this is set too high so that the next line appears outside the boundary

It looks like the shape is a rectangle that is still a live shape. I think you need to convert it to a normal shape.

I tried to do that, but I don't know if it's something I can do.  I made a rectangle shape and then warped it to get the rounded edges which transformed it into a path.  The "convert to shape" option is grayed out.
