Cutting a selection, but it pastes something entirely different...?

After making a selection via pen and hitting "Command x" (Mac) to cut the selection, I hit "Command v" to paste and what is being pasted is another image I had cut previously that is not even open. Please help! 😞

The Pen Tool does not create Selections but Paths or Shape Layers, so your description seems to be incomplete. 

Which Layer is selected anyway? 

 

Could you please post a screenshot with the pertinent Panels (Toolbar, Layers, Paths, Channels, Options Bar, …) visible?
