Question

DDS Transparency

Hello, I am using Photoshop CS6.

I am trying to import a .dds file with transparency. The transparency shows perfectly in paint.net.

When I use NVIDIA's DDS plugin for Photoshop, the transparency is gone, replaced by black. This is bad (because the application that uses the dds files for icons requires transparency around/between icons)

Tried another DDS plugin, same problem

Got any ideas?

The "transparency" is there, you just have to load it from the Alpha channel in the Channels panel.

Ctrl click the Alpha channel to load the transparency selection and in the Layers panel click on the Add Layer Mask icon at the bottom of the layers panel.

Anyway, try the Intel Texture Works dds plugin which offers a choice on how to open a dds file with transparency.

You want to leave Load Transparency as Alpha Channel unchecked.

Contact the Plugin developers Its DDS support is not what you want.  See If Nvidia and other developer have an option for what you want. Photoshop support transparency in layers except the Background layers.  Photoshop background layer is a special bottom layer that dose not support transparency. Having a Background layer is optional.  Can you not select the black ares you want transparemt and delete those black pixels?
