Desperate: "Could not initialize Photoshop because an unexpected end-of-file was encountered."

In attempting to make space on my hard drive I uninstalled old versions of photoshop... when asked whether or not to keep preferences I said no because I'm an idiot and I don't understand these things. However when trhing to open my remaining (latest) version I got the message:

Could not initialize Photoshop because an unexpected end-of-file was encountered.

I've looked up help but can't see what to do if I've not kept the preferences in an older uninstall.

Can someone help? I'm desperate!!!

Are you opening Photoshop by opening a document? "Unexpected end-of-file" usually refers to a corrupt document.

But if you get this by launching Photoshop from taskbar/start, you should uninstall and reinstall. That should fix any damaged program files.

I don't see how this has anything to do with preferences. That's in your user account, not the program files.

Generally, there's always a slight risk in uninstalling older versions with a newer version still installed. Some still needed components may go out with the uninstalls - most commonly the file associations, but I suppose other things could possibly happen too.

So in the future, always follow strict version order. The safe way to do this is to start with the newest version and work backwards. Last in, first out. Once you've uninstalled all of them this way, reinstall the one you want to keep.

Hi thanks, that is really useful advice!

I did manage to get it open by removing the photoshop settings folder from my preferences folder in the library folder. Then restarted photoshop by holding down the shift+option+command (I think it was those) keys. It launched and all was ok! But I would like to avoid this happening again in the future and I will follow your advice!

Many thanks!
