Question

Disable density change by linking layers

Hi,
there's this problem I stumble about since years now (think I had it already in earlier Versions than PS CC).
If I link some layers with different densities together, they are all set to the same desity.

For example I have an object on layer 1, set to 100% desnsity,
a light shadow on the next lower layer 2 set to 50%
and a darker shadow on lower layer 3 set to 80%.

Then I link the three layers together via the little "chain button", and every layer's density is set to 100% immediately.

Beside I don't see any benefit in this partly destructive automatism, it only happens the first time (don't ask me "first time of what?"!). If I undo the action and link it again, the densities stay like they should.

So, where can I switch this automatism off completely?

If you target more than one layer what is shown in the layers palette Opacity and Fill felds represent the top most layer targeted in the  layer stack.

I don’t seem to be able to reproduce the problem on Adobe Photoshop 19.1.6 and Mac OS 10.12.6.

Please provide more details and screenshots (including the pertinent Panels) illustrating the issue.

Maybe check this out (in particular the section titled "Supply pertinent information for quicker answers"): https://forums.adobe.com/docs/DOC-7044

Part of the problem is, that I can't really reproduce it either. I have no clue when it shows up exactly. I just do my normal workflow, link the layers together and the opacities of the marked layers change suddenly.
Like I wrote; after an undo I can repeat the linking the same way and everything is fine.

That's why I wonder. I would really like to know what "super hidden top secret" action I did ...and how I can avoid it. Till yet I assumed it would be an normal and Adobe-wanted feature. You never had that problem? Hmmm...
Next time it happens, I will add screenshots to make more clear, what I mean. Sorry and thx.

I could not reproduce it in real, but thats how it looks like.
The green layers have the watch (100%) and the two shadows (80% and 50% opacity).
I mark all three of them (I spared to make a picture of that since you know how it looks) and clicked the link-button.
When they are linked they are all swapped to 100% opacity as you can see in the picture itself and in the opacity field.
Btw. I am working on PC, win10pro, PS Version 19.1.4 - nothing special, no plugins as far as I know, no modifications.

Hope that explains a little bit better what I mean.
