Distort > Polar Coordinates issue

Using PSCC, Win10

Before cropping an image to a square I find I have to check the "delete cropped pixels" box in order to have the Distort > Polar Coordinates filter work.  If I don't the result is a distorted rectangle instead of a distorted square.  Is this the way its supposed to work or is the program not working properly?

    If the Filter is applied sans Selection to a Layer that contains content that is not square that would sound like the expected result.

    I'm not getting that. Can you post some screen shots showing what you're getting? If you are getting a rectangle, I would try using the marquee tool to limit the filter.

    I am attempting to make an orb, a simple four step process for which I used

    to use an action, simply crop and then click the action. That no longer

    works, so I tried doing it manually, but the only way it works is if I

    check the Delete Cropped Pixels box. If I leave it unchecked, these

    screen shots show what I get.

    After cropping, first step is Filter > Distort > Polar Coordinates> Polar

    to Rectangular. The screen below shows status before clicking the OK button.

    Second step is to rotate image 180

    Third set is a second distort, this time Rectangular to Polar.

    The screen below shows what happens if, after executing the second distort

    and image is not an orb, I then click on the crop tool. The filter has been

    applied to the entire original image.

    If I follow your suggestion and use the marquee tool, the distortion works.

    BUT, to do so requires resetting the marquee tool after rotating the image

    180 degrees and then apply the second distortion.
