When I drag an image into photoshop it appears as a layer in an existing image I am working on.  I want it to come in as its own tab and I can move it as a layer if I choose too.  What am I don't wrong is there a setting I am missing?

Adobe Photoshop Version: 19.1.1 20180206.r.254 2018/02/06: 1156206  x64

Thanks!

You need to drag the image onto the area where the image tabs are.

Thank you, like I said this is different in elements and I just thought I was going crazy!

Goodness, you are a busy lad today Tony, but you are welcome to ask as many questions as you like.

What operating system are you using?  AFAIK dragging an image file into the Photoshop widow when there is already a document open, is always going to Place the new image as a new layer in the existing document.  With Windows I generally right click and choose Open With which I agree is not as fluid as dragging.

Another alternative is to drag the image file onto Photoshop's desktop icon if it has one.  This still needs several operations though.  Windows key D, will show the desktop and the desktop icons, but you then still need to open file explorer or the Finder depending on your OS.   If the image file was also on the desktop, that would work, and it will also switch back to Photoshop as the active window.

I have been using Elements for years and that is the behavior I am use to.  This just seemed very odd to me!

    Thanks!

OK.  Perhaps Elements does not have the Place option.  The problem with workflows is that they become second nature. We do it without thinking, and it can be difficult persuading our muscles to learn a new way.
