Drawing under a gradient map

so im trying to make a thumbnail and I want to add this glow effect that uses a gradient map, brush tool, and smudge tool but everytime I select my gradient and make a clipping mask the lines pop up like this {image 1} but it supposed to look like this {Image 2} whats the problem here?
