duotone causes crash

I have a large image (6,800x4,400 px) in grayscale image mode. When I select duotone mode, Photoshop instantly crashes. I tried cutting the size in half and it still crashes the moment i select duotone. I even duplicated the layer into a new photoshop file and it still crashes instantly when I click duotone.
