Question

Edit as Layers in Photoshop 2020 not behaving as expected

When I try to open 6 photos from Lightroom in Photoshop 2020 as layers it seems to go through the motions but I only end up with a single layer when it is done.

Alternatively, I have tried to export them as JPG and them batch import them (using File -> Scripts -> Load Files Into Stack) as layers, but when do that the only two things I need to do (align layers, blend layers) are greyed out. As well, the same happens when I import the CR2 raw files from my SD card.

I am trying to learn focus stacking and all the tutorials make it out to be easy but none of the things that just work for them with a click are working for me.

Lightroom Classic 12.3 / Photoshop 21.2

MacBook Pro 13 2015

Canon 5Ds R

Please help.

Ed

Hi! Sorry to hear that you're having the issue.

And, Thank you for the screen shots! I noticed that the image is in 16 bit, have you been able to import 16 bit images into a previous version of Photoshop before and have them all fall into layers?

I did find one post about Auto Align Layers that might be helpful: https://community.adobe.com/t5/photoshop/auto-align-layers-greyed-out/td-p/10184003?page=1

In my search, I also found this article on Focus Stacking and Auto Blending: https://briansmith.com/how-to-use-lightroom-photoshop-focus-stacking-auto-blend/

See if this takes care of the issue, and if not, let us know!

This is first experience with trying to focus stack in Photoshop. I have been following some YouTube tutorials and I've been running into problems because of these problems--my inability to import from lightroom or the greyed out options.

Before I posted here I had already found the first solution you suggested and unfortunately it did not work. I've tried to go through the tutorial you posted, but it assumes you can import from Lightroom correctly (which is not happening) and assumes that the option to auto blend in the edit menu is not greyed out (which it is)

I am a photophop newbie. Is there something I'm mising? All the tutorials I have found all suggest that editing as layers in Photoshop and auto blending my layers should be as simple as a click.

EDIT TO ADD: I exported them as JPG in 8 bit color and saw no difference.

Are there specific requirements for the files I'm editing as layers?
