The setting Edit > Preferences > File Handling > check "Do not append "copy" to filename when saving a copy" appears to be ignored during Automate > Batch ... processing that involves saving a copy of the file in a different format (webp to be specific).

True. The text " copy" added to the name is the problem I'm attempting to resolve.

Technicaly you are saving copy, by the way.

Sorry for the late reply. The reply notice apparently didn't make it to me. Per your advice, I see the "Save as a copy" in my action steps. That, of course, is a problem. However, I don't see an option to uncheck in the Save As dialog:
