Edit selection differently

I have a photo of my niece I want to edit. I want to edit the background differently from her. I selected her, then I created a new adjustment layer with her selection as a mask, then I inverted it and edited the background fine.

Now I want to edit her but I can't get the selection to invert back in a new adjustment layer. As you can see in the layers panel, the outside of her is selected in all the layers. How do I create a mask with her selected so I can adjust her?
