Editing a saved image

I'm in a design fundamentals class online, and one of my assignments is to arrange black and white shapes from the side of the project to the main portion of the screen. The project starts off as a template I download from the online classroom, and when opened has many layers, one for each shape. When I save as a .jpg file, and have to revise it for the next assignment, the file that I save now only has one layer, and that's the entire project. I can't move anything any more. Is there a way to separate the layers again?

The jpeg format doesn't support layers. Use a format that does (tiff or psd).

As others have mentioned, you can simply to a Save As and use .psd or .tif.  Just make sure you double check your assignment submission requirements before submitting for the class.  Best of luck in your classes

No, unfortunately not.

Always save in a format that keeps the layers, such as PSD or TIFF. Then is a jpeg is required , for example to send to someone electronically, then use Export As or Save for Web.
