Error 21: undefined is not an object. LR-PS-LR [2017]

Hi I get this error is PS after trying to save a smart object (photo) from Lightroom. The file doesn't save and PS dies. Any ideas?

The photo is stored on an external drive - not sure if that might have something to do with the issue.

Any ideas?
